执法悍将执法悍将叙述了传奇西部警长怀厄尔普的一生，从他在怀俄明州乡下长大，为了想要从军参加南北战争而跷家，却因为年纪太轻而被拒绝征招，到后来转而研读法律，并与乌芮拉（安娜贝丝吉许）结婚，然而乌芮拉很快的因为伤寒而过世，自此厄尔开始酗酒并以盗窃维生，好在父亲尼可拉斯（金吉恩·哈克曼）逼他戒酒，并将他送去西部，交给其它三位兄弟一起以猎水牛生活，在那里，他与兄弟们用以暴制暴的方式，将坏人赶出了城镇，也因此开始了尔普传奇枪手的人生
在这期间，尔普崎岖的爱情生涯也没停歇过，先是与犯有毒瘾的妓女麦蒂在一起，然后为了女演员乔西而甩了麦蒂
